Short answer: Backed into a snowbank or buried on an unplowed side street? Here is how a Buffalo winch-out is priced, what to do before the truck arrives, and when the car needs to ride instead.
Three Ways Buffalo Cars Get Stuck
Backed into the snowbank the plow left at the end of the driveway. Buried at the far end of a side street that has not been plowed since the band came through. Or slid off the shoulder of a town road in the Southtowns where the drift hides where the pavement ends. All three are winch-out and recovery work, and between December and March it is most of what we do. We do not work the highways, expressways or bridges. That is a different license and a different truck.
What Sets the Price
The price is $199 to book plus $150 an hour from when the driver arrives. What that comes to depends on how long the pull takes, and three things decide it; you can judge all of them from where you stand. How far the car sits off the pavement, because every foot of pull is work. What the truck can anchor to, because a winch needs something to pull against and an open field offers nothing. And whether the car still rolls, because a car with a wheel packed solid with ice has to be dragged rather than pulled. A car a few feet off a plowed driveway in Amherst is the easy end. A car nose-down in a ditch on a back road in Aurora is the hard end. We quote it on the phone from your description.
Before the Truck Arrives
Stop spinning the wheels. Every revolution polishes the snow under the tire into ice and digs the car deeper. Clear the snow from in front of the tires and from under the car if it is high-centered. Straighten the wheels. If you have sand, kitty litter or floor mats, put them under the drive wheels. And know your cross streets, because a buried car on an unplowed street is hard to find in the dark.
When the Car Rides Instead
If the pull reveals damage, a bent control arm or a tire off the bead, the car is not driving home and the winch-out becomes a flatbed tow for only the mileage, $7 a loaded mile, with no second booking fee and no hook-up fee, because the $199 already covered the hook. If the car is fine, you drive away. The winter breakdown guide covers the rest of what the season does to a car.
The Numbers This Guide Uses
- Tow: $50 booking fee + $110 hook-up fee + $7 per loaded mile. $160 before mileage; $195 on five miles; $300 on twenty. Flatbed and wheel-lift cost the same.
- Jump start $129, car lockout $129, flat tire change $169, fuel delivery $129 plus the fuel, battery replacement $199 plus the battery. Flat, booking fee included, no mileage.
- Winch-out and recovery: $199 to book plus $150 an hour from when the driver arrives. How far off the pavement, what the truck can anchor to and whether the car rolls decide how long it takes.
- No after-hours, weekend or holiday rate. Quoted before the truck is sent; paid when the job is done.
Every number is on the pricing page with a calculator, and the questions page has the short answers.

Questions This Guide Gets Asked
How much does a winch-out cost in Buffalo?
It is $199 to book plus $150 an hour from when the driver arrives; how far off the pavement the car sits, what the truck can anchor to and whether the car rolls decide how long it takes. Tell us honestly and the number you hear is the number you pay. If a tow follows it adds only the mileage, $7 a loaded mile, with no second booking fee and no hook-up fee.
Can you pull my car out of a snowbank near me at night?
Yes, around the clock, on driveways, lots, side streets and town roads across Buffalo and Erie County. Not on highways, expressways, parkways or bridges.
How much does it cost to pull a car out of a ditch in Buffalo?
$199 to book plus $150 an hour from when the driver arrives. How far down the car is, whether it is upright and whether it rolls decide how long it takes. Winch-out and recovery covers driveways, lots and town roads, not highways.
Can a neighbour pull me out with a pickup and a chain?
They can try, and the usual result is a bent bumper or a torn tie rod that costs more than any winch-out. A proper pull goes to a recovery point, slow and straight.
What do I do if my car is stuck on the expressway shoulder?
Call 911 or the state police. Expressway recovery is handled by the police rotation. We take over once the car is off the highway.
Stuck right now? Call and get the number before the truck is sent.
$50 to book, $110 to hook, $7 a mile. Jump start $129, lockout $129, flat. No after-hours rate.
